Leather Dog Leashes

What is a dog leash?

A leash, which can be made out of a wide variety of things including synthetic and natural materials, is a long durable length of material that connects to a dog’s collar in order to facilitate either control or restraint. Leashes can be tied to a collar, although most modern leashes have some form of clipping mechanism that connects to a metal loop on the collar.

Why are they used?

Dog leashes are utilized primarily for walking the animal in a public area, such as on the street or in a park. Having a dog leash is a valuable tool if you want to protect both your animal and the people around you from potential harm. When you walk your dog in a place with a lot of people or moving objects, they will sometimes get confused and run the risk of being hit by a car. Dogs can become very stressed in these situations and could unintentionally snap and bite someone around you.

What should I look for in a dog leash?

The primary attribute you need to consider is how durable the leash is. If the leash breaks after your animal bites it, or gets frayed while dragging on the ground for a few seconds, you are going to seriously wish that you invested in a better material. Generally, the cheaper the rope, the more inexpensive that it is going to be. Evaluate how prone to biting and chewing a leash material is before purchasing it, although if your pet does not munch on the leash, you can choose from a wider variety of materials.

What kind of materials are used?

As already mentioned, dog leashes come in just about every possible form. The most simple of these being a plain metal link chain or a rope. These allow for a cheap way to keep your dog from hurting himself or others, although they do not offer much functionality beyond the basics. The metal chain leash will undoubtedly weigh more than any other option and drag downwards, putting strain on a smaller dog’s neck. Ropes can be chewed through and otherwise destroyed by dragging on the ground, so even though the rope is a traditional leash material, it is rarely used nowadays.

Nylon dog leashes

Synthetic materials such as nylon offers you and your dog a very lightweight and robust leash option. There is no strain on the dog’s neck, and the nylon is very difficult to chew through or otherwise destroy. They are weatherproof and extremely strong and durable. This is one of the more common types of materials used in leashes and collars.

Leather dog leashes

Of the different materials that leashes come in, leather is undoubtedly the most classy option. High quality leather dog leashes have a very durable clip made out of metal, and can take quite a beating. The leather itself is primarily for decoration, however leather is naturally very durable when processed and offers a leash life span comparable to that of a nylon leash. Leather dog leashes are generally preferred to nylon and rope leashes because leather is very attractive looking and allows for maximum flexibility with age, and as a result many dog owners tend to match the leather leash with a leather dog collar or leather dog harness. However, if your dog has tendencies to bite or chew on his leash, then stay far away from leather.

Types of leashes

The standard leash is a length of material that connects to a dog collar. However, there are many other types of leashes. One of the most useful leash designs is the short training leash, which is typically a foot or two long. This style of leash is designed to aid you in training your pet. You have the most control over his actions and can allow very little freedom if necessary. A simple jerk or tug on the leash and your pet will feel compelled to heel.

Retractable dog leash

Another style of leash is called a retractable dog leash, and of all the leash types, offers your dog the most freedom. Attaching a retractable leash to a leather dog harness or collar allows your pet to wander a lot further away from you than if you had a regular leash. This is both convenient for you and liberating for the dog. These leashes are usually made out of nylon and generally feature a locking mechanism that can stop your dog from pulling the leash further.

Reflectivity

A common concern shared by people living in cities is that traffic is thick, and at night drivers can not always see your pet at a glance. Luckily for both you and your dog, leashes come with reflective patterns on them! This allows the light from the car’s head lights to reflect vibrantly off of your leash, alerting them of both your and your dog’s presence.

Leash laws

All over America and other nations, there exist various leash laws that require pet owners to restrain their animals with leashes in public. There are a lot of different reasons why leash laws exist. One of the most important reasons why leash laws have been enacted is to protect citizens from aggressive, violent pets. A large dog is completely capable of killing a human in a single, well aimed bite to the neck. Even though most dogs are docile, some things can provoke animal attacks that the owner has no control over. This is why the leash is required.

Why are there leash laws?

Another reason is for the animal’s own safety. A dog may be a relatively big animal when compared to a cat, but to a car, it is just a very small obstacle. A vehicle impacting a dog will almost always cripple the animal and usually results in it having to be put down. A third reason for leash laws is to protect people’s property. Animals that can run around loose have a tendency to destroy property and use lawns as a toilet, and this can be costly for business and home owners alike.
